Why Email Lists Matter More Than Instagram Followers in 2026
Social media platforms come and go, algorithms constantly evolve, and viral reach is becoming harder to sustain. After Instagram’s latest purge of fake followers and spam accounts, many business owners are questioning how much they truly own their audience. This article explores why email marketing, business systems, and owned platforms are essential for building a sustainable online business in 2026.
The Instagram Purge Exposed a Bigger Problem
If you’re still relying on social media as your main business platform.. we need to chat.
It’s 2026.. Instagram has just completed the great purge. Everyone’s in a fuss. Millions of followers gone overnight.

Nothing to be alarmed about.. it’s bots and spam accounts… it’s a gooood thing.
Not to mention it just goes to show how fake celebrity and influencer culture has become. How many of these accounts purchased followers? Participated in follow for follow growth tactics?
The Era of Fake Growth & Vanity Metrics
I know that’s what I was taught when I was first getting started with affiliate marketing. There was literally programs built to like, follow, comment, and DM all on your behalf.
We called it the IG Machine and we would build heaps of accounts that were all duplicating content automatically so we could extend our reach.
At one point I had something like 50 accounts. And it worked. The amount of leads I was raking in was undeniable.
It was all a game of numbers and I was winning on pure volume.
But, as my current mentor always says, “what’s fast, doesn’t last!”. And I absolutely learnt this the hard way.
When that affiliate business shut down for fraud and I lost all my income overnight.
And then Instagram started cracking down and I lost most of my accounts.
At it’s peak, my personal account had 60k followers. Over the years I’ve gone through and deleted thousands cos I didn’t want that fake energy associated with my account anymore.
And most of those followers weren’t my ideal audience anyway. Which is why I ended up creating this account. So I could start fresh and build genuinely.
Why Email Lists Still Matter in 2026
And beyond IG, the thing that has kept me going... I ALWAYS had an email list.
The stats don’t lie. At this point, Instagram feels like more of a pretty business card than an actual way of reaching people.
I’m not here to talk about follower counts and algorithms though.
What I care about is your business ecosystem.
How do you stay in contact with the people who actually want to hear from you? Do you have an email list???
People still act like email marketing is dead…

Which is wild considering email is still one of the only spaces online where you can actually speak directly to people without begging an algorithm for permission.
People Are Craving Depth Again
If you’re in a panic over losing some Instagram followers, it begs the question, what are you actually building?
Are you just thinking about engagement and virality? Or are you thinking about how to form genuine relationships and deepen these connections?
Is all the effort you’re putting into your content serving a greater purpose? Are you thinking about longevity and sustainability and building a world that turns followers into contacts who are opting in to stay connected to you?
These platforms may have led you to believe that everyone has short attention spans and no-one wants to read long form content anymore.
But I think the mass exodus to places like Threads and Substack tells a different story.
There’s a whole lot of people who are tired of the flashy content and viral trends. There’s people who care about what you have to say.
And, it’s up to you to train your audience. To let them know you’re here for something deeper.

And to make sure you don’t sound like a regurgitated content machine. Cos duhhhhh no-one cares about reading the same 10 steps over and over when AI can give them that information.
They want to get to know you, your stories, your perspectives, what shapes your opinions. Your lived experience. Give them that... and watch how people flock to join your email list to stay connected.
Social Media Should Lead People Into Your World
Now obviously, social media is the place where most of us grow our email lists, so being on these platforms still holds some level of necessity.
Butttt it shouldn’t be your entire strategy.
How many platforms have come and gone? How many times have rules of engagement changed?
If your whole business depends solely on social media, you’re always building on borrowed real estate.
Your social media platforms are discovery tools. Your email list is your relationship infrastructure.
When you build an email list you can bring it with you wherever you go. It’s people who have said, yes I care about what you have to say enough to share my precious email with you. And that’s not something to take lightly.
Your Business Needs Infrastructure, Not Just Content
If Instagram disappeared tomorrow… my business would still exist. Because I have infrastructure that I’ve built over the years. And that will always stay with me.
My website and blog are always there. My automations still work. My ecosystem is still alive.
I proved it to myself this week... even after having everything on hold while I was deciding where to go instead of Kajabi, my email list still existed.
This week I thought I was emailing a dead and disengaged audience. And my open and click rates were straight back to market averages.
Whereas Instagram has felt like a much sloooooower burn.
That’s the part people skip when they’re obsessing over visibility. They focus so much on getting seen by more and more people all the time, that they forget to build somewhere for people to actually land.
Then they forget about nurturing and warming up their audience beyond socials. And wonder why they’re exhausted, when they’re dealing with so much churn.
They’re stuck in an endless cycle of: post → perform → disappear → repeat. Always feeding the machine without thinking about building foundations underneath it.
Sustainable Businesses Are Built on Ecosystems
The most sustainable businesses aren’t built on viral moments, they’re built on infrastructure. On solid, sustainable foundations.
Systems, customer journeys, communities... spaces people can return to outside of the algorithm.
That’s why I’ll always care more about:
your email nurture sequence
your website
your backend systems
your customer experience
your retention pathways
…than chasing another trending audio or what to post to go viral.
What’s the point of all that reach if it’s leading people nowhere?
Would Your Business Survive Without Social Media?
So the question is... if social media disappeared tomorrow…
Would your business still be able to function without it? Or have you accidentally built your entire world inside someone else’s kingdom?
Want your business to be less likely to fall apart? Build the infrastructure that is made to last!
Not sure where to start? Heeyyyyy… that’s where I come in. Book in a Systems Diagnostic session and let’s make a personalised plan of attack to get your business ecosystem floooowing!

Further to my point... I just saw some friends mention their IG accounts have been suspended.
Unfortunately this is all too common, especially in some niches the Meta Gods deem particularly problematic… ya know, niches that talk about embodiment and rights and liberation and all those pesky things that aren’t good for keeping people conforming.
And whilst I don’t agree with a lot of these suspensions.. it does further prove the point that relying solely on social media for business growth is never the smartest move.
If you’re here for long term vision and sustainability, spend some time thinking about your backend infrastructure and entire customer journey.
That’s what’s gonna keep your business standing beyond any social media changes.
