Many entrepreneurs put a lot of focus into building their business brands but today let's talk about why building your personal brand is just as important.

Why Building Your Personal Brand is Important

Even though you want to build a company that has a recognisable brand. It’s also really important to think about building your personal brand.

What does this mean exactly?

Basically it’s about showcasing who you are as a person. In this day and age people are less likely to trust brands as they are to trust people. So if you’re putting all your focus into building a company it’s important people also get to see the face behind that company. This is how you will be able to build stronger relationships, have a higher chance of attracting your ideal clients. And build up the all important know, like, trust factor.

In a social media driven world people are exposed to information on the daily. So you need to find a way to stand out against your competitors. If another company is providing similar products or services, your point of difference to the customers is who you are. Knowing who you are can help your business seem more real.

Not to mention, having a personal brand can help to boost your company’s visibility and bring even more attention to your business. If you are seen as a thought leader or expert in your industry, it will naturally attract more eyeballs to your company. There’s a reason why so many business leaders and entrepreneurs make it a point to build their own personal brands and share their thoughts and experiences on a wide variety of platforms.

Having a personal brand also means you can align yourself with many different companies. Because you have a loyal following that trusts in you.

Top Tips For Building Your Personal Brand

When it comes to building your personal brand I like to separate it into 4 main categories. You have the personal elements of your brand, the technical, the design and then the strategy.

The key elements that are involved in building your personal brand

Let’s break it down a little more…

1. Building Your Personal Brand – Personal Elements

This should be your first point of consideration when building your personal brand. These are all the things that make up who you are as a person and why you’re running your business in the first place.

Consider things like your why, your niche and your target audience. Knowing these details helps you determine where you should be showcasing your brand. Then you should also consider your message and your story and how you’re going to communicate that. Even consider your clothing and personal style that you want people to recognise you for.

And if you really want to take things seriously one of the best investments you could make is into some personal branding photos and videos.

2. Building Your Personal Brand – Technical Elements

Once you’ve got the personal elements covered it’s time to get techy. If you’ve got a company website, consider whether it’s worth having a personal website as well. So people can learn more about who you are. And this way you can align with different businesses and services along the way.

Take Gary Vee for example – he has a strong personal brand which is established at https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/. But he also runs a full service digital agency VaynerX which has its own website plus VaynerMedia and he started out in a wine business.

The reason he is so well known isn’t because of his companies, it’s through his strong personal branding. And it’s only once people go to his site or start looking into him more that they learn about his companies. So this is a prime example of getting more eyeballs on his company through strong personal branding.

Technical elements you should strongly consider setting up when building your personal brand include a website, email, and domain.

To secure your custom domain I recommend using Bluehost as this is one of the best platforms for hosting websites. Once you have your domain you can install a WordPress site with a click of a button. Refer to my How To Start a Blog post for full instructions on how to do this. It’s also very simple to set up your email with Bluehost as well.

If you’re anything like me and don’t like to get too techy, sometimes it’s easier to leave the website design to an expert. I purchased my Aussie Adventuress site from Tonic and within a few button clicks everything was up and running. And now I get so many comments on how great my site looks and functions.

For this new site, I decided to go with Wix because I’d heard how user friendly and customisable it was. And it definitely fits this mould. With great templates that can easily be customised, it’s a great platform. The only thing I don’t love is their blog. It has nothing on WordPress which is definitely something to keep in mind if you want to add a blog to your site as well. Tonic has a WordPress blog on the backend so from that perspective it is better.

** I’ve since moved away from Wix as I really couldn’t deal with their blog. Read this post to find out what platform I moved to and why.

3. Building Your Personal Brand – Design Elements

And now for the fun part of building your personal brand. Design time! Even if you don’t think you have a creative bone in your body you’ll be surprised how simple it is to design a beautiful brand.

Things to consider are your logo (this could be as simple as using your initials), colours, fonts, filters, templates, email headers and business cards.

And you can do pretty much all your design work in Canva. But if you really don’t feel like doing things yourself you can always hire freelancers from places like Fiverr.

4. Building Your Personal Brand – Strategic Elements

And the final, and ongoing part of building your personal brand is your strategy. This takes into consideration all the previous elements and puts them together to ensure you have the right methods in place to attract your ideal clients.

Things to consider here are your long term goals, marketing plans, social media platforms, content creation, email strategy and sales funnels.

When it comes to email marketing I recommend a service called GetResponse and for your sales funnels you can’t go wrong with Clickfunnels.

As for social media, that’s a whole other beast which I’ll get to in more detail in coming posts.

And there you have it. All my top tips for building your personal brand.

Have fun going out and building yours. I’d love to know how you go…
