Welcome to episode 31 of the Branding With Jade podcast where I’ll be talking about How to do Instagram Hashtag Research.
As I was doing my own very overdue hashtag research yesterday I decided to poll my Instagram audience to see if this was something they would like to know about, and the answer was a resounding yes.
So in this episode I’m sharing all my top tips on how to do Instagram hashtag research.
Let’s get into it shall we!
In this episode I’ll be sharing:
- Why it’s important to research your hashtags.
- How to research hashtags.
- My hashtag stepping process.
- The importance of creating a mix of hashtag sets.
- The importance of using hashtags that are relevant to your post.
HERE’S WHERE YOU’LL FIND SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS:
>> [4:53] – when it comes to hashtags you don’t want to be using any random hashtags. It’s important to consider your niche and regular content topics so you can research hashtags that relate to this.
>> [5:59] – the key is to get a variety of hashtags with different levels of posts. And not to use hashtags with millions of posts because your chances of trending there are too slim. Scroll through related tags until you find ones with smaller amounts of posts. Brainstorm as many tags as you can for each of your main content pillars.
>> [8:45] – use all 30 hashtags and it doesn’t really matter if you post them in the caption or the first comment. I always do the first comment purely because I write long captions and don’t want to waste that valuable space on hashtags.
>> [10:45] – once you’re done brainstorming then you want to create as many sets of 30 hashtags as you like using my hashtag stepping method. You want a healthy mix of tags so you have more chance of ranking in the top posts.
>> [14:24] – also, make sure you’re checking the types of posts that are showing up for the hashtags that you’re considering using. You want to do this to make sure the content is similar to yours so it will attract the right people, and also to make sure there are recent posts so you know it’s not a banned hashtag.
>> [15:45] – remember, hashtags aren’t a strategy on their own. You still need to ensure you have high quality content that gets people taking action.
>> [17:00] – you don’t want to use the same set of hashtags all the time, which is why you want to create a mix of different sets so you can rotate your hashtags all the time.
>> [19:00] – it’s also good to leave space for hashtags that are specifically related to your photo. For instance locations like cafes, places you’re travelling in, brands that feature in your photos etc.
>> [20:20] – a neat tool that has helped my hashtag research to be soo much easier in the past. Linked below.
