Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that Pinterest is all the rage right now. It’s especially handy for bloggers who want to increase traffic to their sites. After realising just how powerful a tool it can be I decided to start dabbling in turning my old, unused Pinterest account into a business account. Read on to find out how I doubled my Pinterest traffic in just one month!

Firstly, what is Pinterest?

For those that don’t know, Pinterest is actually a search engine. Most people make the mistake of thinking it’s just a social media platform but it is far more than that. The other mistake so many people make (myself included) is not realising its business potential.

I’m sure you’ve used Pinterest to save your favourite recipes, home design & fitness inspo, or even wedding ideas. But did you know Pinterest can be used for soooo much more than that?!

And those that are using it correctly are profiting big time.

Why Pinterest?

Well first let’s take a look at some stats…

  • 175 million monthly active users
  • More than 50 billion pins have been created
  • More than 1 billion boards have been created
  • 81% of Pinterest users are females
  • Millennials use Pinterest as much as Instagram
  • 87% of pinners have purchased a product because of Pinterest
  • 72% of pinners use Pinterest to decide what to buy offline
  • Over 5% of all referral traffic to websites comes from Pinterest
  • ⅔ pins represent brands or products
  • Average time spent on Pinterest per visit is 14.2 minutes


So, while it may be a smaller audience it is a highly engaged audience that is coming to the platform with a goal in mind. Generally to find something that will solve a problem they’re having. Unlike social media platforms every pin includes a link which means much higher traffic and buyer potential which is why it is so great to drive huge amounts of extra traffic to your blog.

So… how does it work?

You just create a bunch of boards, re-pin other people’s pins, and voila you get lots of views, right?

Well yeah re-pinning other people’s content is great but that doesn’t really get you the views you want… the key to success with Pinterest is being able to refer traffic to your own content.

So you need to have a strategy… and with the right strategy you can drastically increase your views within a short amount of time.

Here’s how I doubled my Pinterest traffic in one month…

**Sadly I don’t have a screen shot from before I updated my profile. I didn’t think to get one, but I took a screen shot the day I implemented all the changes and you can see how I doubled my Pinterest traffic from 22 September to 23 October my views have doubled**

1. I updated my banner to reflect my best pins.

Many people don’t even realise the pins highlighted at the top of your profile can be edited. I sure didn’t. But this is prime real estate on your Pinterest profile. It’s one of the first things people see so it’s a good idea to showcase your content here so people can see exactly what you’re about.

I recommend creating a ‘Best Of’ board and setting this as the only content that features in your banner.

How I doubled my Pinterest traffic in one month

Pinterest is one of the hottest platforms for gaining more traffic to your blog/website, but unless you know how to get views on your Pinterest account you'll still struggle to get traffic to your website. In this article I'm going to share with you 7 simple things I changed to double my Pinterest traffic in just one month.

2. I updated my title to show exactly who I am and what I do

That old saying ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to social media/search engines. With so much information out there, and Pinterest being a very visual platform, what people see at first glance is everything.

And your title is a prime place to state exactly what you do so people can determine straight away whether your profile is one they want to check out. When I first started I simply had my name (not even my proper name – something like jademaree88) This doesn’t tell people anything. Make the most of all the characters you have available and be clear about what you do.

3. I added my website so people can actually visit it

You can’t get traffic to your website if people don’t even know you have a website. You have a spot to include your website, make sure you use it!

This might seem like a no brainer to you but you’d be surprised how many people don’t realise what a powerful business tool Pinterest is, and therefore don’t even set up their profiles for a business strategy. Just like me up until a month ago lol.

4. I updated my bio to give people a clear idea what my profile is about

Just like your title, this is a prime place to really let your audience know exactly what they can expect from your profile.

Remember, this is not a social platform, it’s a search engine. So be clear about what problems you can solve and what content people can expect to find on your profile. Whilst you can’t add a clickable link, this is also a good place to share a simple funnel link that people can easily copy & paste or type into their browser.

5. I edited my featured boards to be reflective of my brand

If people look up your profile one of the first things they see are your featured boards. Make sure these are your top boards with your own content. And that they are relevant to your brand and what you want people to take away from you.

6. I made sure my boards are relevant to my brand

Lol when I first logged into my account to set it up for my business (after 2 years of not touching it)I had the most random boards. But these boards had no relevance to my brand or purpose. If you really want to keep your fun ideas boards make them secret or create a brand new profile for your business.

Personally after 2 years of not logging into Pinterest I didn’t see any reason to keep the boards so I just got rid of them and started fresh. Creating boards that are aligned with my bio and overall message.

As you can see, my boards don’t even have a whole lotta content at the moment and I’ve already doubled my views in a short amount of time. So once you get consistent, growth on Pinterest can be very rapid.

7. I started pinning daily

At first I was blogging daily and then I had something new to pin each day… but obviously this method is time consuming and can become unsustainable.

Some suggestions are to make a bunch of pins related to one blog post and then you can share one a day over the space of a week or so until you write your next blog post.

Or, if you really want to get organised there’s ways to automate your pinning strategy. I only implemented this recently so yet to see the benefits but I’m pretty confident after seeing the kind of results from manual posting for a month, that the next month’s growth is going to be even more amazing.
