The truth about winning awards…

So last night I attended an awards night where I was a contender to win one.

awards 1

When I was nominated over 6 months ago I thought it was something I really wanted. I put a lot of effort into my submission and was ecstatic when I was announced as a finalist.

Yesterday, instead of visualizing myself going up on stage and claiming that award, I kept thinking about seeing more referral emails in my inbox.

Whilst I was telling myself I wanted the award, that wasn’t the real message I was putting out to the universe because things have changed and I wasn’t so sure I wanted to go up and claim that award knowing full well I’m finishing work in a few weeks and it just felt like a big contradiction.

In the end the message I was putting out did get rewarded and I saw more of these emails in my inbox this morning. This is what I really want, to help others and inspire others to make change in their lives as well.

Yeah it might’ve been cool to have the recognition for a brief moment, but it wouldn’t have been true to my vision, and in the end it was the right result.

After all….

“The only person you should try to be better than, is the person you were yesterday.”

I don’t know who said this quote but I think it pretty much sums up how I feel.

It also reminded me of something I read recently from Paul Arden’s book, It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be. It’s a great little book if you need motivation and the best thing is each point is covered off in one or two pages so you can flick through and find different inspiration that works for you at different moments.

But anyway, the point that I remembered from this book was that you shouldn’t try win awards, and here’s why.

“Awards are judged in committee by consensus of what is known. In other words, what is in fashion. But originality can’t be fashionable, because it hasn’t as yet had the approval of the committee. Do not try to follow fashion. Be true to your subject and you will be far more likely to create something that is timeless. That’s where the true art lies.”

I quite like that I’m going outside my comfort zone and trying the unknown. It feels a lot more true to me and makes me a lot happier.

Hope you’re all doing the same.

Much Love

Jade xo
