So You Want To Know How To Keep Your Business and Personal Life Separate…

You’ve started an online business, but you don’t want your friends and family to know what you’re up to. Here’s some tips on how to keep your business and personal life separate.

When you start an online business there’s two ways you could approach it.

  1. Hassle all your friends and family and spam like there’s no tomorrow until someone finally buys from you.
  2. Look for traffic sources outside your personal network, build new and genuine relationships with people who actually have the same interests as you, and your product will sell itself.

Personally, I prefer option 2. There’s no harm in talking to your friends and family once, but if they’re not interested at the start then leave it at that.

When I first started my business I had the added worry of not letting any of my work colleagues know what I was doing. I also didn’t really want my friends and family knowing what I was up to because I didn’t want anyone trying to talk me out of it.

For that reason I needed to find ways to build my business without utilising my existing social media pages.

So what did I do?

First – I started up a Facebook page. This is actually really simple.

From your homepage on Facebook you just click the drop down menu on the far right and click on the ‘Create Page’ option.

The next steps are pretty self explanatory. You select the type of page you’re creating (business, public figure, brand, cause etc) choose your category, give it a name, then get started. You can create ads to make your page known and get people following you that way.

**if you’re starting a business you’re going to need a page anyway as this is the only way you can run ads.**

Next – I started up a Facebook group.

I use my page for more personal, fun, motivational stuff. Then I use my group for more business related posts.  To start a group is pretty similar steps to starting a page (see steps above).

Another thing you can do on Facebook is filter your friends into different lists.

Then you can share posts with that list only so if you want to share stuff on your personal page but not let certain people see what you’re sharing this is a great way to do it.

My other biggest step was to set up Instagram accounts for my business.

I now manage a few separate accounts and this is my main source of traffic and leads. And the best bit, it’s completely free. And now you can even have up to 5 accounts running under one log in so it saves you logging in and out every time you want to upload a photo to a different account.

Depending what other social media accounts you’re using will determine what else you do. I also have a youtube account, pinterest, twitter etc. Whatever you’re comfortable with you could do. The more presence you can create for yourself online, the better.

It can be a little daunting starting from scratch, but it’s also such a breath of fresh air.

Once I created my business name it was like I was instantly free, in the sense that I could finally actually be myself online.

Have you ever caught yourself holding back from posting something because you’re worried what your friends will think, or you know they’ll think you’re posting too much etc.?

Once I created my new presence online I was able to post as much as I want, and actually post things that mean something to me. And the responses I’ve been getting to this is wonderful. I’ve already connected with so many like-minded people and get to have wonderful conversations from people all over the world on a daily basis now.

This business has opened my mind to so many opportunities and I’m so grateful I found it.
