When have you had a sink or swim moment?

Today’s daily blog challenge was on the topic of sink or swim so I decided to go with a funny, but mostly embarrassing story.

I’m slightly embarrassed to even write about this, but my family won’t let me forget so I may as well document it for everyone else to laugh at my expense.

Let’s just start with a disclaimer. I am 27 and yes, I still live at home with my parents (so do a lot of my friends – it’s pretty normal these days right?!)

I don’t have the greatest cooking skills as I haven’t really had to fend for myself and when I am home alone I generally resort to some form of take out (my favourite is Thai). I can make a few basic dishes but I’ll never be a master chef.

Rewind about 5 years, maybe even less. But the main point is I’m slightly younger and have even less skills. Mum and dad are going to Europe and leaving the three of us kids home alone for the first time ever. They’d been on holidays before but we were always left in adult supervision. This was the first time they trusted us to stay on our own. I was about 23 after all.

Reasons to be concerned.

  1. My siblings and I don’t like each other.
  2. I can’t cook.
  3. I don’t have a car and I can’t really drive. (I had only recently gotten my licence).
  4. I’ve never really managed a household before.

Cue disaster. Please note, I am the oldest, yet I was not left in charge. My sister (the youngest of us) had money transferred to her to cover our food shopping etc. I was clearly very trusted (NOT). My brother and sister basically took charge with all the cooking duties and I did more of the cleaning duties. We were actually surviving pretty well.

Except one night, for some reason my brother and sister were both going to be home late so  I was left in charge of preparing dinner. Arghh would I sink or swim? Was I scared, no way, this was my chance to shine and prove to everyone I’ve got what it takes. Well that was a massive fail.

Before they left mum had bought a few different packets of pre marinated chicken breasts. Just in case I ever did have to cook, she had told me all I would have to do was take the chicken out of the box and put it in the oven. This is literally what I did.

But inside the box the chicken was in a plastic container. Do you think I took the chicken out of that container and put it into something oven friendly? No, that was never mentioned in the instructions.

Do you think I was keeping an eye on the kitchen? No. I’d set the timer so I didn’t have to wait around. I was free to go back to my important task of watching tv or something like that.

Do you think I was the one to notice the burning smell of plastic? No! Thankfully my brother arrived home before the house burnt down as I was blissfully unaware of the plastic chicken catching fire in the oven.

My chance to swim quickly turned into a disaster, I sunk big time. And that was the last time my family left me in the kitchen unsupervised for a very long time.

I’m glad to say I have learnt a bit more now and I can actually get by in a kitchen (albeit what I can do is very simple). But the main thing is, I will be able to fend for myself when I go on my big travel adventure. From here on in I’ll only ever be swimming.

Much Love

Jade xo
